Braid Rug

Old clothes or out styles clothes can be fair game for Braid rug. Here in India, the dupatta /shawl is worn with Indian suit.I had collection of shawl which I planned to make beautiful rug.

Supplies:

Old dupatta/shawl or even old clothes
Two pillow case.
Thick thread

Make rug with strip of fabric braid. Proper preparation of braiding strips is very important. Cut material into strips one to three inches wide. The more colour strips, the more attractive.

You can join the strips of fabric but don’t splice on the same spot then your rug have lump in that area.I lash all three stripes with thick thread. You can sew them together for better result.

Hold at the knot ,you can pin them to the back of the chair or table and start braiding.

Braiding - The braid described here is called three-strand braid. It is very simple, but here are some tips for getting best results. Take three strips of material that have been prepared. Sew them together at ends. Sew only eight or nine feet of strips together at one time or braid will become tangled. Join end of braid to something stable.

Mentally number strips from one to three, from left to right, then begin braiding. Pass strip three over center strip two and under strip number one. Continue this same procedure until three of four yards are braided, then begin sewing.Once done secure the end by sewing it together.

You can make rug in different shapes. I choose rectangle, I have two old pillow cover. I folded one pillow cover and sew the braid on the cover. Ensure the braid is flat on the surface and not its side. Hold the braid firm on the cover and hem through. Use thick thread to sew.

Braid goes zig zag on the fabric, the corners should be laced by sew them together

Note:  Effective way of hiding thread you slide your needle between the braids

This how the rug will look once done.

Frontside

I folded the four sides of other pillow cover.  Place the finished rug on top of the pillow cover and sew four sides for better finish on backside.

Final touch: Im a ruffle girl.  I love ruffle on anything.

Cut long strip of fabric to ruffle.Sew the ruffle (Ruffle making) along the four sides.

Go ahead and try make one...
